Pre-Feasibility Study for the East Med Gas Pipeline Project

of Public Gas Corporation of Greece (DEPA) S.A.

East Mediterranean gas will play an important role as the EU incorporates this newly found source into its energy policy. The European Commission has recently approved the East Med Pipeline as a Project of Common Interest (PCI).

The pipeline will be able to carry around 8 bcma providing Europe diversification and security of supply as well diversification of routes.

The Project comprises:

  • A pipeline from the field (offshore) to Cyprus;
  • A pipeline connecting Cyprus with Greek Island of Crete;
  • A pipeline from Crete to mainland Greece and further to the rest of Europe.

Various alternate routes from Crete to mainland Greece are under consideration:

  • From Crete to the Peloponnesus Peninsula and joint with IGI or the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP);
  • From Crete to northern-east Greece where it would join the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) with two options: Direct offshore line to vicinity of IGB or offshore/onshore combination via intermediate landfall;
  • From Crete to the Revythousa LNG terminal close to Athens.

Provided Services

Pre-Feasibility Study of Natural Gas Facilities (Offshore Pipeline Landfalls / Onshore Pipeline Routing & Compressors Stations location) in East / South Crete, Peloponnesus & West Greece, comprising of:

  • Identification of constraints that limit options for dual landfall and Compressor Station locations, covering all pertinent aspects, such as:

    – Local Topography / Land availability
    – Geological Suitability & Potential Geohazards Considerations
    – Existing Infrastructure & known Planned Developments affecting Pipeline and Onshore
    Installations
    – Environmental Constraints affecting Permitting Process
    – Archaeological Constraints imposing Restrictions
    – Technical Constraints & Construction Feasibility Considerations

  • Compilation & Qualitative Evaluation of all gathered data
  • Reporting & Presentation of the findings with recommendation for the suitable locations
